Meet this year’s Distinguished Volunteer Zoe, our outstanding Local Ambassador in Washington, DC, who has dedicated four years to welcoming Atlas Corps Fellows to the United States, helping them discover the city, and sharing American culture with them.
At Atlas Corps, we have a tradition of stating our “Five Facts” when introducing ourselves to new people. What are your five facts?
Name: Zoe Poindexter Hometown: United States Organization affiliation: Associate Producer at Long Story Short Media Social Issue/Interest Area: Womens & girls empowerment, right to housing, and restorative justice Fun fact: I am a horror movie fanatic. |
Why did you decide to volunteer for Atlas Corps as a Local Ambassador?
I found out about Atlas Corps after attending a panel conversation in 2018 about volunteer opportunities in the DMV. I felt most qualified to serve as a local ambassador because I love welcoming people to this city and making new friends.
How has volunteering with Atlas Corps impacted you?
It has been so delightful meeting all the Fellows I have crossed paths with since 2018, they welcomed me in just as much as I did for them. It has truly broadened my horizons learning about their culture and customs back in their home countries. Most importantly it has made me so happy to know that I have made a new friend in every fellow I’ve paired with.
What message would you like to send to individuals who are thinking of volunteering with Atlas Corps?
I would tell anyone interested in volunteering as a local ambassador that it is one of the easiest but also most impactful volunteer work that you can do. These Fellows are changing the world in meaningful ways, and it should fill anyone with immense pride to support them with their friendship while they do this work.
Thank you, Zoe, and our hundreds of volunteers who help achieve the Atlas Corps mission every day. We look forward to celebrating you on October 18 at 12:30 pm ET during the Atlas Corps Celebration of Service! Learn more about becoming a volunteer at volunteer.atlascorps.org.
