Atlas Corps volunteers are essential to the organization for making sure things run smoothly. Today, we would like to talk more about Atlas Corps Group Captains. Our Group Captains facilitate monthly peer coaching groups as part of our new Virtual Leadership Institute, an online learning community for global social change leaders from around the world.

Since launching the Virtual Leadership Institute, 16 Atlas Corps Alumni became our Group Captains helping Scholars create a productive environment for co-learning, develop leadership projects, and guide discussions about leadership and social impact.

Today we talk with Arturo, Atlas Corps Alum from Mexico, and a Group Captain for the Atlas Corps Virtual Leadership Institute.

Name: Arturo Gonzalez

Home Country: Mexico

Current Organization: ForteOrigen Learning

Role at current organization: Instructional Designer

Social Issue/Interest Area: Education

Fun fact: I learned how to ride a bicycle during my Fellowship in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and later during my Fellowship, I finished an 80-mile bike ride!

Why did you decide to volunteer for Atlas Corps as a Group Captain?

I decided to volunteer as a Group Captain because I had just finished my term as part of the Atlas Corps Board of Directors, where the main focus of my projects was Alumni engagement. I really wanted to be a part of the new ways to engage as an Alum and be a part of the Virtual Leadership Institute. It was a brand new initiative and a great step for Atlas Corps, and I wanted to be a part of it and help in any way I could.

How has volunteering with Atlas Corps impacted you?

Volunteering as a Group Captain was a really enriching experience. I got to meet great scholars from around the globe and I was able to remain connected with our mission. I learned a lot from my group; these were some of the best conversations I’ve had and I feel like I gained a lot of insights and new friendships. Whenever I was done with my monthly call, I would come back to work and tell my peers about it.

What message would you like to send to individuals who are thinking of volunteering with Atlas Corps as a Group Captain?

To all those considering becoming Group Captains, I highly encourage you to apply! The best thing about it, as in the Atlas Corps Fellowship, is the people you meet there. The conversations to be had and the stories to be told are certainly some of the treasures you take home after every call. The support you get from the Atlas Corps staff is also stellar; you don’t have to worry about a thing. This is a great opportunity!

Atlas Corps Scholar Mona (Cohort 1, Egypt) shares, “Arturo is an awesome communicator. His outgoing personality makes it easy to build a rapport with him even in a fully virtual setting. During our meetings, we had an exchange of experiences which created very insightful discussions. He did a fantastic job of keeping an interesting and engaging space.”

Thank you, Arturo and our hundreds of volunteers who help achieve the Atlas Corps mission every day. Learn more about becoming a volunteer at volunteer.atlascorps.org.
