A world that is being led by hate

“This is not happening… this is just not happening, this is a joke”.

I believe those were not only my words this past November 8th. As I was glued to the television, watching state by state turn red; my friends were crying.

“How did this happen?” “How did we let this happen?”

That is not a complete unsolved question; it happened the same way this whole world is happening… choosing hate instead of love. It happened because of us; it happened because we were given free will, and the power of decision making… and we did; we chose HATE.

This past week was unbelievably sad, not only for United States citizens, but for the world itself. The question will always remain as: HOW? How did this happen? How did we elect a joke as a President? ; And the truth is, it happened because the world as it is right now, it’s damaged, and hurt; the Presidential election is just a consequence; a reflection of the lack of love and understanding among the human kind.  Here’s the thing:

It is 2016. We are bombarded with social media, freedom of speech, consuming products, capitalism, social movements, political correctness, labels, wars, fights, riots, protests, and I can go on forever; and we feel like there’s nothing we can do about it. Why? Because that’s how complex we are as humans! Because, somehow, the fact that I am, and exist in society as a (n): Young, Mexican, woman, androgynous lesbian, and feminist, is affecting someone else’s comfort zone of being a: religious, dogmatic, bigot, conservative! Therefore, we will never agree on something because, for that person, I am wrong for this world; and for me, the person needs to be educated, and change her/his ways when a message is being publicly shared in society. Just with this example, and huge amounts of lack of tolerance, we can escalate to a war if we’d like to; because, that’s how HATE starts! By acknowledging our differences first, and then feeling like we have the moral judgment, and power to scrutinize someone else’s actions. And I’m not saying that my life views are the best or the right path to follow; but I do believe that what we call “diplomacy, political correctness, inclusion, diversity” comes from a deep core that is called LOVE; LOVE TOWARDS THE HUMAN BEING ITSELF. I’m not asking you to love my labels or my social constructs; I’m not asking you to love my political views or my nationality; I’m asking you to recognize myself and my right to exist in this world as a human being, as much as you have yours; and that can only be done through LOVE and UNDERSTANDING.

I was devastated with the news of (now) President- elect Trump. First of all because I’ve been a Hillary Clinton fan for a very long time; and second, because I knew what it meant to get that man elected. Forget about the wall, his radical views or the way he expresses himself about women; also, forget about Clinton’s emails, forget about her 30 years of experience or her progressive views… look beyond… who was the American people choosing? Yes, you got it, the new ‘person in power, leader of the “free” world’ who portrays one of the most colossal hate speeches ever in history; a message who only benefits certain kind of people, certain people that make a country “proper and acceptable”, as if everyone else weren’t enough of a citizen to live here; as if the borders shown in maps, defined who we are. Then, I switched countries, and I found out that in Mexico, our congress had rejected the marriage equality initiative that President Peña Nieto had proposed, because they thought that if LGBTIQ+ people have the right to marry in México: “we will end up marrying dolphins or laptops”… Of course I was devastated. My social media was EXPLODING with hate messages IN BOTH COUNTRIES. So, I stopped to reflect about it, and I came to many conclusions, the most important one is this: Imagine three titans fighting each other… one titan represents all the people who are ‘in power’, or that have a platform to send global messages, and use it to (basically) destroy our world (Hitler, the KKK, Putin, Trump); the second titan represents also, people ‘in power’, but that help to evolve our earth; the third titan is us, the people, who (sadly) most of the times, feel powerless against the other two titans. So there we are, fighting; without realizing that the strongest force relies on the third, THE PEOPLE; and that, without the third titan, the other two cannot even fight.

You’re free to have your conservative, restrictive, radical views and opinions about a topic that concerns us all; but having hateful views towards other human beings’ right to exist doesn’t mean your views are ok, and welcome to become laws or norms in society. Who do we think we are? Are we some kind of special, unique, super humans that have the right to neglect someone else’s life? Because that’s what happening with our world leaders; we’re being led by hate, we are making policies around hate; and right now, being a social leader with a good message… costs. People live in fear of standing up, and take back the power that belongs to us. We are in desperate need of more lovers, healers, peace makers, social lovers and builders! We are in need of people who ARE ABLE to acknowledge others as their own!  Our new generations, our children are only reacting to all the mess that we’re creating, and that they’ll have to put up with in the future; so it is up to us! It is up to us to take the wheel, the nearest exit, and switch our world to an inclusive, loving, peaceful place. It’s not even about wars, international affairs, allies, enemies, alliances; neutral zones, religion differences or economy… is about understanding that we all are THE SAME.

“But all the people on earth…”

“All you. Different incarnations of you.”

“Wait. I’m everyone!?”

“Now you’re getting it,” I said, with a congratulatory slap on the back.

“I’m every human being who ever lived?”

“Or who will ever live, yes.”

“I’m Abraham Lincoln?”

“And you’re John Wilkes Booth, too,” I added.

“I’m Hitler?” You said, appalled.

“And you’re the millions he killed.”

“I’m Jesus?”

“And you’re everyone who followed him.”

“Every time you victimized someone,” I said, “you were victimizing yourself. Every act of kindness you’ve done, you’ve done to yourself. Every happy and sad moment ever experienced by any human was, or will be, experienced by you.”.
